The casting for the role of Damon Salvatore was pretty challenging. Since it was a very important character, the showrunners spent a considerate amount of time in the casting process. Several actors such as Paul Wesley, Nathaniel Buzolic, Michael Trevino had also read lines for Damon’s role, but would eventually end up getting different roles on the show.
Ian Somerhalder who had experienced a setback after he failed to bag a role on HBO’s True Blood. So when he learned about an opportunity on the Vampire Diaries, he was fully convinced that the role belongs to only him. However, there was a little problem as the show creators were initially looking for a young actor in his early to mid 20’s for the role of Damon. But Ian’s acting skills and charm fully convinced the creators that he was the perfect fit. Ian was finally cast in the role of Damon around March 2009.

While the character of Damon was intended to be a villain that the fans would hate intensely. When he made his debut, he made it evident that he is going to cause all sorts of chaos which he eventually did. But there was only major problem, Damon was too charismatic and cool that soon his villain became a beloved character. The writers and show creators considered a fan favorite villain to be a problem because it wouldn’t do justice to the stories and plot. Because no matter how evil and terrifying things the villain do, the fans will rally behind him which was a major problem from the storytelling perspective.
The writers had to work hard to come up with stuff that would make the fans hate Damon, events such as him snapping the neck of Jeremy were written to get heat on Damon. But the fans still came up with excuses to justify the behavior and actions of Damon. This surprised the show creators who were confused and couldn’t understand why the fans are crazy for this character despite all the wrong that he did. So the fan favorite reaction that Damon received forced the writers to pass the crown of evilness to a new villain who was Katherine in Season 2.
