4. TYPES OF HUNTERS
Although a hunter specializes in the knowledge of Supernatural concerning all the different species and creatures. but there are some hunters who have a talent of hunting a particular kind of being. Take for example, Lily Sunder who summoned Ishim who was an angel who grew attached to her. When Lily found out that he’s a monster, she distanced him. Ishim took out his wrath on Lily by arriving at Lily’s house with his flight of angels, he claimed that Lily has given a birth to a Nephilim which must be eradicated. Ishim killed Lily’s daughter in front of her. Lily spent her entire life learning the Enochian, the science of the angel magic. She grew extremely powerful and used the power of her soul in seeking revenge. In Season 2, we were introduced to Gordon Walker who specializes in tracking and hunting the vampire nest. Then we have the hilarious ‘Ghostfacers’, the self-proclaimed paranormal experts who deal in ghostly hauntings.
3. THE FIRST HUNTER
The earliest known hunter we have come across in Supernatural is Samuel Colt. Eric Kripke based this hunter’s character on the legendary gun maker. In the hunter’s world, he is considered to be the most legendary hunter who is credited with the creation of the Devil’s Trap and The Colt. During the passing of the Halley’s Comet, Samuel Colt created a gun which could kill anything (except 5 things). His Colt proved to be a big help for the Winchesters who managed to eliminate Azazel with the gun. He also used a combination of five churches to create the formidable Devil’s Trap which prohibits any demon from passing. There were talks of launching a spin-off focusing on the adventures of Samuel Colt, but it never came in fruition.
2. HUNTER’S LIFE
A hunter’s life is full of trauma and suffering. They are continuously on the road, the are burned out emotionally, physically, and mentally. Hunters don’t have a very long life expectancy. Once they have chosen this life, they could get free from it. Even if they try, their past somehow catches up to them. We have seen plenty of such examples. Mary Campbell craved a normal life, away from the Supernatural and hunting, she married John and had two kids. All seemed perfect for her until the moment it wasn’t. Azazel, the demon from her past with whom she once made a deal entered her life again, and caused her demise.
Surely, it sounds all cool to be a hunter, but the sacrifices one needs to make are tough. They have to work beyond the moral lines, they have to do what a normal human couldn’t even imagine ever doing. Hunters move from town to town, they live in cheap motels, they eat fast food and live on beer. Hunting becomes their full time profession even though there have been some hunters who took up a secondary job as a facade to fit in the world. When a hunter meets his death, their deceased body is placed on the logs and a white sheet is wrapped all over their body. Salt is thrown all over them and then they are torched. This ritual is followed to prevent the soul of a hunter from becoming a vengeful spirit.
1. NOT ALL HUNTERS ARE HUMANS
While the hunters are mostly humans, but there have been some characters who belonged to other species and possess a good amount of hunting knowledge. At the core, hunting is about saving people and hunting things. So anybody who saves lives and kills the monsters is a hunter in a way. The most notable non-human hunter is Castiel who under the wing of the Winchesters really developed some sharp hunting skills. Along with his angelic powers and the knowledge he gained from the Winchesters and field experience, he is one great hunter. Then we have the Nephilim Jack Kline who under the wing of the Winchesters really groomed into a fine hunter.
