Castiel ultimately confessed his feelings for Dean Winchester in Season 15 episode titled ‘Despair’. He sacrificed his life to summon the Shadow who takes Castiel and Billie along with him to the Empty. Castiel told Dean that he’s not hate or anger. Everything that he has done, the good and the bad, he did it for love. He raised Sam for love and fought the entire world for love. It is who he truly is. He believes that he has changed ever since he pulled Dean out of hell. He changed because Dean cared and because of it, he also started caring about the world. Castiel is also the only angel in the Supernatural Universe who developed feelings for someone who belonged to the same gender. There have been some hints earlier towards the romantic feelings of Castiel. In Season 13 episode ‘The Big Empty’, the entity named Shadow tells Castiel that he knows who Castiel loves and there’s nothing for him back there. The Shadow told all this in order to make Castiel quit from trying to return to Earth. Castiel’s futile attempts to return ruined the sleep of the Shadow. Ultimately, Shadow was so annoyed that it let him go back.
