CW Network gave the green signal to the TVD pilot episode on 6 February 2009. The pilot episode of Vampire Diaries premiered on 10 September 2009 on the CW Network. The Pilot episode of any show is very crucial because it can decide whether a show will be ordered further by the CW Network or will it get cancelled. When it came to TVD, it hit the ball out of the park with its pilot. It garnered a total number of 5.7 million viewers which is the highest rating for the CW Network at the time. The first season of the show was watched by a total number of 3.60 million viewers. The success convinced the CW Network to order the show. Vampire Diaries was given a green light to the full 22-episode season. Numerous comparisons were drawn with Twilight and the pilot episode, but TVD soon made it clear that it is completely different and unique.

A spin-off carries great potential. If a show succeeds with a spin-off then it could become a franchise. In 2010, the CW’s then President expressed the potential for a spin-off, but the idea was put on hold because Kevin Williamson, the co-creator was working on a different show. With the introduction of the Mikaelsons in Season 2 and their further history and family dynamics explored in Season 3. Fans began expressing the idea for a spin-off and the creator Julie Plec along with the cast members were also sold on it. On 11 Jan 2013, the back-door pilot for the Originals would air on 25 April as a part of TVD Season 4 episode titled ‘The Originals’. On 26 April 2013, we learned that the Network has ordered a full season of the Originals which aired on 3 Oct 2013. The series featured the Mikaelson Family who we saw on the Vampire Diaries along with plenty of new actors, the show takes place in the city of New Orleans. On 20 July 2017, Plec announced that Season 5 would be the last season of the Originals.
