Love triangles are an integral part of the TVD Universe. Both the Salvatore and Mikaelson brothers have fallen in love with a Petrova doppelganger. Stefan and Damon first contested for the love of Katherine who ultimately chose. This didn’t sit well with Damon who planned on making Stefan’s life a hell. Later on, when another Petrova doppelganger Elena Gilbert came into the picture who chose Stefan, Damon continued making proposes and moves on her despite knowing that she is with his brother. He could have walked away, but deep down he wanted the love of Elena.
Similarly, the Mikaelsons also fell for a Petrova named Tatia who chose Elijah. Even though it created a conflict between the brothers, but it wasn’t as severe as with the Salvatores. Elijah would ultimately go on killing Tatia due to his uncontrollable bloodlust resulted from his new vampirism. He would confess about this tragedy to Klaus in Season 2 of the Originals who would forgive him. Klaus would once again forgive Elijah who once compelled Aurora, the love interest of Klaus, to hurt him deeply.

The Mikaelsons have walked the earth longer than any other vampires. But one thing that has been constant throughout their lives is their vow of ‘Always and Forever’. Mikaelsons always prioritized their family over everything else whether it’s an love interest, absolute power, or dominance. Even the family members such as Finn who fought against the family for most part was cared and his death was avenged.
