Another misconception surrounding the Vampire Diaries is that many consider it to be a bootleg version of the Twilight movies. While there are certain similarities such as the love triangle between the titular characters, them being teenagers, and of course VAMPIRES! But you’d be surprised to know that Vampire Diaries came first. TVD is based on the novel of the same name written by LJ Smith which was first published in 1991 whereas the Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight didn’t see the light until 2005. However, the Twilight movie based on the book was released in 2008. Whereas Vampire Diaries aired its first episode in 2009. Due to the strong recency bias, Vampire Diaries ended up being labelled as a copy. But the fans who had read both the novels; Twilight and Vampire Diaries know how different both Universes, characters, and the stories are.

While many easily dismiss Vampire Diaries as just another Vampire show. There have been numerous vampire shows in the history of television such as Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The Strain, Supernatural, True Blood, and lot more. But what Vampire Diaries comparatively better is that it created a franchise, a spawned a Universe consisting of two successful spin-offs named Originals and Legacies. While the idea of a spin-off is ambitious, but often results in a disappointment. Buffy The Vampire Slayer spawned a spin-off titled Angel which didn’t attain the same popularity or success as the predecessor. But Vampire Diaries hit the home run with the spin-offs. The Originals proved to be a major success not only for the TVD creators, but also for the CW Network which capitalized on its success.

Another thing people get wrong about the Vampire Diaries is the show is all about the Vampires. Surely, the Vampires are the central characters, but the show features other supernatural species also. TVD features witches, werewolves, sirens, hybrids, and lot more creatures. Again, the best thing is that it explores each species in depth. There are meaningful storylines comprising of these characters. While the show is crowded with vampires, but they are not the most powerful beings in TVD Universe. There are witches who can easily match them in power.
