3. DAMON FROM THE BOOKS WAS EXTREMELY CRUEL
Damon Salvatore in the Original Vampire Diaries novels was extremely sadistic, cruel, and dangerous. The book version was purely cold hearted, ruthless, uncaring, and unsympathetic. He is a self absorbed person who would use threat, manipulation, coercion to get what he wants, not caring about who gets hurt in the process. Whereas the TV version was cruel and manipulative in the beginning, however the influence of Elena changed his personality. He comforted a dying Rose, protected Elena from Klaus, and ultimately ended up becoming an anti-hero. Even the actor Ian Somerhalder was against this decision, he wanted Damon to remain an evil villain. Damon was an extremely powerful vampire in the books whereas in the show he was just an average vampire of his age. Even his real powers and abilities such as transforming into a crow, wolf are not explored in the series.

4. KILLER OF BELOVED CHARACTERS
You would think that Klaus Mikaelson is the big baddie who has killed the most number of our favorite characters. However, it’s Damon Salvatore who killed the most main characters on TVD. He killed Alaric Saltzman, Matt Donovan, Vicki Donovan, Jeremy Gilbert, Elena Gilbert, Stefan Salvatore, and himself. Luckily, none of those deaths were permanent. But a few permanent deaths that occurred at his hands were Tyler Lockwood, Lexi Branson, Zach Salvatore, and his pregnant girlfriend. He killed Tyler under the influence of Sybil, but rest of the killings, he was fully in control of.
5. AN ARMY VETERAN
Damon Salvatore is a Veteran of the American Civil War (1961-65), he joined the Confederate Army because of his father’s order. His job was to defend the South during the war, but he hated what the South stood for. A man named Oscar convinced him to follow his own beliefs, he deserted his side, and his squad got decimated in the battle. He represented the US Army in the WW2 (1939-45). During his time in army, he was a part of the 23rd Virginia Infantry Regiment.
