5. THEY WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO APPEAR

His original storyline was always about the Winchesters fighting the demons, slowing climbing the hierarchy, and ultimately fighting the devil Lucifer. It was later when people started suggesting him ideas for angel episodes then he realized that he needed angels to tell the story of the other side of the coin.

4. POP CULTURE KNOWLEDGE
At first when the angels appeared, they were ignorant of the human pop culture. They didn’t even understand the human expressions or sarcastic remarks as we have seen Castiel often times stating that he doesn’t understand the reference. However, similar to demons when they possess a human vessel, they should have access to all the knowledge and memories of their human vessel which should allow them to have an understanding of the pop culture, but they still lacked it.
3. ANNA AND CASTIEL
Did you know the angel Anna was going to replace Castiel at one point. Castiel was supposed to die in the episode ‘On The Head Of A Pin’ by Alastair, but his popularity forced the writers to keep him alive. Instead, they killed off the character of Anna. Anna and Castiel share numerous similarities such as both lost their grace and memory, both went rogue, both were killed by an archangel. Anna is also the only angel that Dean had slept with and had a romantic relationship.
2. ANGEL HIERARCHY
Well, we have been made aware of the demons hierarchy on the show. Similarly, there’s an angel hierarchy, at the top there are archangels like Lucifer, Michael who are the most poweerful angels. They can smite any demon easily. Then comes the Grigori angels who are powerful and were tasked with protecting humanity, but they turned evil. They started feeding on human souls. Then there are Seraphims who are powerful than regular and Cherubs angels. Castiel belong to this group. Then comes the regular angels such as Anna. Finally, we have Cherubs who are basically the third class angels. There’s another group of Angels known as the Rit Zien who have the responsibility of curing the injured angels.
