Many at first dismissed the show believing it to be a rip-off of Twilight, but soon it became apparent that this was something special. Vampire Diaries would go on to become one of the hit shows of CW. The show became a pop-culture phenomenon and characters like Damon, Elena became larger than life. The popularity of TVD spawned two spin-offs, one of which is titled “Legacies” is currently airing.

6. THE CO-CREATOR TURNED DOWN THE SHOW

As you all might know that the show is based on the novels of the same name written by LJ Smith. Kevin Williamson was approached by the studio to adapt the book series into a TV show. But he passed on to the offer. When he read it a bit, he felt it was a rip-off of Twilight and didn’t want to be involved with the project. As the premise was somewhat similar, a teenage girl falling in love with a vampire. But the show co-creator Julie Plec insisted that he kept reading the books which ultimately forced him to change his mind and come on board.

5. THE AUDITIONS

We love the cast of the show and it’s now impossible to imagine someone playing their roles. But did you know that the cast of TVD would had looked entirely different if the studio’s original choice for the actors had worked out. Ashlee Simpson was the Original choice for the role of Elena, High School fame Ashley Tisdale was also considered , but she dropped out. Ian has done a brilliant job of portraying Damon Salvatore, but you will be surprised to know that a variety of cast members such as Paul Wesley, Zach Roerig, Nathaniel, Michael Trevino all auditioned for the role of Damon Salvatore too. Not only them, the 7th Heaven fame David Gallagher also impressed the creators with his audition, but they unsure if he’d be able to get past his image of 7th Heaven.

While Ian Somerhalder got the role, but the actor wanted the role of Jason Stackhouse on True Blood, but couldn’t convince the creators. Ian and Nina ended up getting the lead roles, but it wasn’t easy for them, both of them had bombed their first auditions and had to redo it. The creators weren’t a fan of Paul Wesley. The actor had to audition like 100 times and even then it wasn’t not enough. It was only when Nina was cast as Elena, the luck changed for Paul. It was his one screentest with Nina that caught the attention of Kevin Williamson who had rejected Paul several times.
