The creators of the show Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson made several changes when they adapted the books into the TV series. One such major change was changing the surname of the main characters from Salvatore to Whitmore. But when the name of Zach Whitmore, Stefan’s nephew didn’t clear up due to some reason, they reverted back the surname to the Salvatore. They would go on to use the surname ‘Whitmore’ later for the institute which Caroline and Elena attended. Also, the name was used for the infamous Whitmore Family which was responsible for the creation of the Augustine Society.
