TVD TV adaptation made several changes to the characters and numerous characters were excluded from the TV Series. One such character was Meredith Sulez who was a major character in the book series. She is a human who is best friends with Elena and Bonnie, she also shares a close relationship with Stefan. Her character was originally included in the draft for the pilot episode, but the creators then left her out because they felt there are numerous characters already. She is the only character who was invulnerable to the charm of Damon Salvatore, even the cunning Damon found her scary. However, her character eventually appeared in the Season 3, but her named was changed to Meredith Fell. She was depicted older and instead of a student, she was shown to be a doctor.

In TVD Season 7, Caroline gave birth to the Saltzman twins. As Jo was killed by Kai at her wedding, but with the help of Travelers magic, the twins were transferred to the womb of Caroline who became their surrogate mother. The entire storyline was written because Candice King who played Caroline was pregnant for real while shooting. This is entirely different from the books in which Caroline never became a vampire, but she was turned into a werewolf after she became pregnant with the Tyler Lockwood twins.

Compared to the books, the show took the liberty of making several major changes. The name of the town where The Vampire Diaries is set is Fell’s Church in the books whereas they named the town as Mystic Falls for the show. The story of Vampire Diaries is set in the 1990s in the books whereas the TV story is set in 2000s. Stefan Salvatore has long hair in the books, but not in the books. Also the appearance and personality of Elena Gilbert is also altered. She is mean, popular, and blonde in the books whereas her TV counterpart is entirely different. Also, the brothers’ background is explored in more detail in the books and Elena’s journal also played an important part in the storylines whereas all these things were not that significant in the TV series.

The Arrow fame actor Stephen Amell originally auditioned for the roles of the Original Vampire Elijah Mikaelson which ultimately went to Daniel Gillies, he also auditioned for the werewolf Mason Lockwood, but ended up with the role of the werewolf named Brady who appeared for a few episodes. Also, the actress Alexandra Chando had auditioned four times for the role of the main character Elena, but sadly didn’t get it. But she made a cameo appearance in the final season. Torrey DeVitto who played Meredith Fell also auditioned for the role of Elena.
