When the Mikaelsons fled in 1918 due to the fear of their father, this resulted in Marcel rising up to become the leader of the New Orleans’ vampire community. He slowly expanded his vampire army by carefully transforming a handful of humans into vampires. He trained and made them powerful. Marcel always had a leadership quality in him. As a ruler, he enforced a new system in the New Orleans. He set rules that the supernatural community were forced to abide. He banned the witches in the city from practicing the magic.
With the return of the Originals in town, everything became chaotic. Klaus challenged the authority of Marcel and vowed to reclaim the New Orleans. The Witches community also became active again, they began their hunt to capture Davina in order to complete the Harvest which was interrupted when Marcel rescued Davina. Marcel took his role seriously and ensured that no one is above his rules. So when Thierry was tricked by Klaus in killing a vampire, he sentenced him to the Garden even though he was his loyal friend. He also killed Jane-Anne for practicing magic.
Marcel has displayed genuine care for the vampires in his army, he treats them as his own rather than just some minions. When Klaus fought his army for supremacy, Klaus switched on his werewolf side and overpowered the vampires, he began slaughtering them. Marcel picked up the Mercy coin dropped by Klaus and pleads his allegiance to him in order to stop him from further harming the vampires. When the Mikaelsons got back in the power, they became a part of the faction, representing the vampires.
