The brothers were close as humans, but once they were transformed into the vampires, their brotherly bond changed forever. They both fell in love with a woman named Katherine who turned them both into vampires, but it was Stefan who forced his elder brother Damon to complete the transition into a vampire. This doesn’t sit well with Damon because he was ready to die rather than become a vampire. He decided to make his brother’s life a hell for as long as they live as a payback. This relationship between the Salvatores is far different from the Mikaelsons who took the oath of ‘Always and Forever’ after becoming the Original Vampires.

The finale episode of TVD was heartbreaking for many as it saw Stefan Salvatore sacrificing himself. However, what we must understand is the fact that it was his decision as Stefan saw the selfless nature of his brother which seemed lost after Damon turned into a vampire. He wanted his brother to live out his life and his friend Elena to experience this version of Damon.
Another interesting detail is that neither of the two brothers truly enjoyed being a vampire. Stefan’s ripper persona made him dangerous and unstable. Damon never wanted to be a vampire, but the choice was taken from him. So it was a great thing that both brothers would become humans again before the show ended. They got to live the human life and experience things that they missed out due to the vampirism.
