If it weren’t for Silas and Amara becoming immortal, we would have the doppelgangers in the first place. The Salvatore and Petrova Doppelganger bloodline was born as a result of nature trying to maintain the balance and deal with the immortality of Silas & Amara. This species has been linked with the witches and vampires. it was the great witch Qetsiyah who created the immortality potion. It was also due to the doppelgangers that the Vampire race could come into the existence.

Tatia, Katherine, and Elena were born as the shadow selves of Amara. They are a part of the Petrova doppelganger bloodline who would die in place of Amara. Whereas Stefan Salvatore and Tom Avery are part of the Salvatore Doppelganger bloodline who were created as the shadow selves of Silas who became the first immortal being. As Tom was the last doppelganger and with his demise and the passing of Stefan, the Salvatore doppelganger bloodline is extinct. Whereas Elena is the last Petrova Doppelganger. It is implied that she and Damon have children together. But now since Amara is gone, the balance has been restored, it’s highly unlikely that we will see any other Petrova doppelganger.
Another important aspect of the doppelgangers is their blood which is a source of immense magical power. The blood of a doppelganger can be used in various kinds of magical spells. We saw the Original witch Esther transform her children into the Originals using the immortality spell which utilized the blood of Tatia who was a Petrova Doppelganger. Similarly, in Season 3 when she again used the spell to turn Alaric into an Original, she used the blood of Elena, linking her life to Alaric’s. Klaus needed the blood of a Petrova to remove the hybrid curse. This is the reason why he searched for a Petrova doppelganger for years and when he found Katherine, she tricked him, and transformed into a vampire, thus failing his plan.
