A day in 1864 when Stefan Salvatore was working on a broken carriage when he sees a carriage which was carrying Emily Bennett and Katherine Piece stops and the driver speaks to him. This is the first Katherine Pierce sees Stefan and she instantly feels attracted to him. Emily and Katherine had come to stay at the Salvatore Estate. Stefan also becomes attracted to Katherine and his brother Damon Salvatore also feels in love with Katherine. But it is very evident that Katherine prefers Stefan over Damon as she had chosen Stefan to take her to the Founders Ball.

When Katherine and Stefan were making love, she revealed to Stefan that she was a vampire. The next morning Stefan Salvatore founds a wound on his neck. He became frightened of Katherine saying that her face resembled like a demon face. Katherine then compels him to not be afraid of her. Stefan’s father Giuseppe is a vampire hunter and when Stefan learns of the Mystic Town’s plan to kill all the vampires, he goes to see his father and tells him that vampires are not as bad as he thinks them to be.
Giuseppe drugs his son’s alcoholic drink with Vervain. Later when Katherine comes to feed on Stefan’s blood, she becomes poisoned. Stefan feels confused and worried for Katherine, not knowing what is happening to her, why she appears to be sick. Ultimately, Stefan and Damon are shot, but having the vampire blood in their system, they cannot die. Katherine returns to Stefan to tell him that she loves him, hoping they would be together. Stefan visits his father who is disgusted to learn what his kids have become. Stefan tells him that he’d die rather than turn, but his father tries staking him, and he accidentally ends up killing him.
