The pair got trapped together in the prison world and it’s then they started bonding and eventually became great friends. Their chemistry was undeniable and they both supported each other throughout the show. When Kai placed Elena in the magical coma and linked her to Bonnie, Damon refused to let Bonnie die in order to bring back his true love. Now that speaks volumes.
While Elena is mostly credited with causing the transformation in Damon and it’s true to an extent. It was the love of Elena that made Damon to become selfless, putting others first. but many people believe that the influence of Bonnie on Damon is the greatest. Damon underwent a great character development during his time with Bonnie in the prison world. It was during this time he truly learned what it’s like to put others before him. Damon placed the needs of Bonnie over him, she also prevented him from regressing to his older nature.
The fans are divided when it comes to Elena Gilbert. While a faction of fans consider her selfless and important, but there’s a big faction that consider her to be selfish and always hogging the spotlight. The fans noticed how she wouldn’t pick one Salvatore and would keep playing them because she was afraid of losing the other. She would also prioritize herself and forget the interests of her besties such as Caroline and Bonnie. Even Jeremy and Jenna ended up suffering because of being associated with Elena Gilbert.
