3. THE CHARACTERS
The Vampire Diaries has very well-developed characters or another way of saying it is that TVD has done a tremendous job of developing its characters. For the majority of the characters, you will find they have a well-explained, in-depth backstory, there’s a continuous progression of the character throughout different seasons. Caroline Forbes started off as an insecure girl, but by the end of the show, we see her as an independent brave woman. Damon started off as a selfish and chaotic person who would transform into a selfless lover and a caring brother. Originals had so much potential with its characters, but unfortunately, it didn’t go anywhere with it. Apart from a few characters such as Klaus and Elijah, other characters were not given a fair chance. Similarly, the very reason why we fell in love with the Mikaelsons is due to their backstory and storylines, their characters were originally developed in the Vampire Diaries in Seasons 2 and 3.
One of the problems of Originals is its repetition of storylines, stagnation, or slow progression of the plot. One of the reasons why Originals didn’t last much was that it ran out of its storylines which is pretty evident from the direction the show went in Season 5. When it comes to TVD, it has always experimented with its storylines, continuously bringing up refreshing and unique concepts. Whether it’s the introduction of doppelgangers, the arrival of the Mikaelsons, Enhanced Original Vampire, The Cure, Arrival of Travelers and Heretics, the show kept on introducing new characters, new settings, and new stories which kept the viewers captivated.
1. THE LORE, MAGIC, AND REALMS
The Vampire Diaries started off the TVD Universe which was then further extended by Originals and Legacies. It introduced us to different beings such as vampires, werewolves, and witches, although such beings have already been presented in several different shows. But the show established its own unique lore, highlighting the different strengths, weaknesses, and origins of these beings. TVD is a fantasy show where one could argue that witches are probably the strongest characters as if it wasn’t for the witches there wouldn’t be any vampires and werewolves. The show introduced to several different forms of magic such as Spirit Magic, Traditional magic, Expression Magic, Traveler Magic, Representational magic, and plenty of other types. In terms of its Dimensions or realms, TVD Universe featured numerous dimensions such as Prison Worlds, Other Side, Bonnie’s Dimension, and Hell.
