The Southside Serpents is referred to a group of criminals who reside on the south side of the town of Riverdale. The group was originally led by FP Jones, but he went to prison to take the fall of Jason’s murder, Jughead was given the honorary membership of the Serpents. He was given this membership as a reward for the loyalty of his mother. It was this time Jughead began learning more about the Serpents and started identifying with him. As per the serpents tradition, the initiation ceremony comprises of four stages, the first stage involves the new member taking care of the Serpent’s dog named Hot Dog. Second stage involves the member memorizing and reciting all the serpent laws in the correct order. These rules are very important as the members live by this code. Third stage involves the member retrieving a knife from the cage of a rattlesnake. The last and the most dangerous stage involves the new member going through a gauntlet which tests his physical and mental strength. The member gets punched by the other members of the group, he must take the punishment and hold his ground still. Only when a member has completed all these trials, he is given the Serpent Jacket and is welcomed into the group.
But when it comes to the female new members, they have to do the ‘Serpent Dance’ in order to earn their membership. This tradition is outdated and misogynist. FP after being released from the jail reclaimed the leadership to save Jughead and the Serpents from Penny. After a while, he retired from being the leadership position and appointed Jughead as the new King of the Serpents. Jughead made Betty her queen and granted membership to Cheryl by giving her a custom red jacket.
