1. He was a national hero:
He was one of the great national heroes during the Indian Independence Movement. Shivaji was well known for his strong religious, warrior ethics and an exemplary character. In the mid-19th century, Maharashtrian social reformer Jyotirao Phule wrote on Shivaji the legend, portraying Shivaji as a hero of the Shudras and Dalits.
2. He had a powerful Navy:
He knew that he needed a great power to maintain control along the Konkan coast, and for this, Shivaji began to build his navy in 1657, with the purchase of twenty galivants from the Portuguese shipyards of Bassein. According to the sources, his fleet counted some 400 military ships, though British chronicles counter that the number never exceeded 160 ships.
3. He took care of common people:
He was very much caring towards his common people and never let raids on households or religious places. Anything that was looted from the enemy cities, was properly distributed and placed in the treasury. If there was a shortage of food, he asked his troops to get more rather than harassing the commons.
4. A great warrior:
He defeated Afzal Khan, his veteran general in a one-on-one battle. Afzal Khan was superior to Shivaji in size & strength. According to some source, they were to meet in a hut each with just a single sword, and here the Khan attacked Shivaji (which Shivaji knew was going to happen). So, he went with armour underneath which stopped Khan’s sword. This is one of his brave act stories.
