Some of the interesting facts about the Soldier bear – Wojtek:
1. The bear was adopted:
The 600-pound heavy brown furred bear Wojtek was adopted by the 22nd Transport Company’s Artillery Division in the Polish. This bear served as a morale booster during World War 2. The bear was a small child to the people who adopted it and they kept it like the one which made him develop habits which were similar to the human.
2. It would have been his 77th birthday this year:
Wojtek was born in the year April 8, 1942, and this child was found in the mountains of Iran. The Polish prisoners who were being transported from a Siberian gulag through the Middle East to Alexandra, Egypt found the child and carried it with them to Europe to fight the World War and during this time, this cub became a reason for living.
3. The baby cub was treated as their own baby:
Wojteks mother was killed by the Hunters which left the baby cub alone. But the baby cub here was given condensed milk to drink but in a vodka bottle in the camps. The soldiers, torn apart from their families due to war treated the cub as their child as explained in the book. And in no time, this cub grew up with the soldiers and became one of them.
