While the main characters got most of the show’s spotlight and were involved in virtually every storyline. But Caroline Forbes is a character which managed to shine amidst the variety of characters. Caroline who started off as a self-centered character who struggled to live out of the shadow of Elena came into her own as the show progressed. She would eventually become one of the strongest female characters in the TVD Universe. Despite losing her mother and Stefan, she maintained a positive attitude and vowed to help the others.
Bonnie is perhaps the most selfless and compassionate character on the show. Having suffering a great deal of loss, become a martyr time and time, she pushed through. Bonnie is arguably the most powerful witch in the TVD Universe.
But she had to pay a heavy price for it. Not only did she lose her loved ones, but she herself sacrificed numerous times for her friends. Many fans criticized the writers for killing off Enzo in the final season and taking away the chance of happy ending from Bonnie.
The only character in the Vampire Diaries who managed to hold on to his humanity and didn’t turn into any sort of supernatural creature. Also, he is the ultimate survivor who faced the most dangerous enemies and still walked out alive. He is the only ordinary human who has the achievement to his name of killing an Original Vampire. Matt Donovan always cared about his family, friends, and the community. The character expressed his desire to run for the Mayor in the final episode.
Alaric Saltzman’s life is nothing sort of extraordinary. From a history teacher to a vampire hunter to an Enhanced Original. He has seen it all. From losing his friends to losing his own life, he has one of the best character arcs. He is one of the few characters who have appeared in all three shows.
She is the ultimate survivor and a certified badass. It was Katherine Pierce who set the events of TVD in motion. The Salvatores became vampires only because of her. For half a century, she ran from the Original Klaus Mikaelson. Everything thought they had seen the last of Katherine in Season 5, but turned out she took over the hell and became the new Queen. She returned for one final showdown, but was defeated when Stefan Salvatore sacrificed himself to take her down. Another strong female character is Jenna Sommers.
Tyler Lockwood who acted as a bully and selfish guy in the beginning, but later we learn that it was due to his untriggered werewolf curse.
Vicki Donovan was turned into a vampire by Damon. But when she couldn’t control her bloodlust, she had to be put down.
