Often times when the writers come up with the storylines, they feel their ideas would definitely entertain the fans, but on more than one occasion, there have been storylines that have fallen flat. The same can be said about the characters, even though the creators have tried their best to make the fans hate or love a character, but the fans ended up doing the complete opposite. When they introduced Damon Salvatore in Vampire Diaries Season 1, they wanted him to be the biggest evil villain. Damon did terrible acts which got him plenty of heat and backlash, but a major section of fans started loving Damon. They didn’t care about his actions and justified everything he did. The writers purposely did all they could to keep Damon and Elena far away from each other because many fans wanted them together due to their undeniable chemistry.

Another example of the the power of fan reaction is Klaus Mikaelson. The character of Klaus was supposed to be written off at the end of Season 3, but the character was popular to the extent that fans wanted to see more and more of him. Joseph Morgan debuted as Klaus in Vampire Diaries Season 2, but quickly rose to the popularity, to the level of the Salvatores. The audiences became immense fan of the Mikaelson Family that they started making edits of a spin-off series revolving around the Original Family. The TVD spin-off ultimately became a reality, but it couldn’t have been possible without the fans.
Also, the fans have been pretty vocal in expressing their opinions. Whenever they feel that a certain character has been done wrong, or given the unfair treatment, they let it known loud and clear. So when Lexi Branson who made her first appearance in Season 1. She arrived to celebrate the birthday of her best friend Stefan, but ended up meeting a tragic and unjust fate. However, her character clicked with the fans, and she was brought back several times in a meaningful fashion.
