Despite of their initial differences, the members of the Mystic Falls Gang came together on various occasions to deal with the threat. But sometimes our TVD heroes had to fight not just one enemy, but a group. In fifth season, we were introduced to the Travelers. A group of extremely old and powerful witches who have passing their knowledge of witchcraft from one generation to the other. They have existed since the time of the Roman Empire. This group holds a grudge against anyone who draws the magic from the nature.

It is believed that the membership to this group is earned through the birthright and people who transform into vampires and lose their ability to use magic are still considered to be a member of the group. The true goal of the travelers was to break all kinds of spirit magic which was used to placed a curse on them, thus cutting them from the Traditional magic. In their eyes, all other sorts of magic was impure, hence to purify it would involve disempowering and undoing it all. They managed to do it using the Magic Purification spell that resulted in all forms of witchcraft being stripped away and only the traditional magic that they practice would remain.
Another powerful coven of witches that we were introduced to were the Heretics in Season 6. Originally, they were the members of the Gemini Coven who were turned into the vampires, but they retained their ability to practice magic, thus becoming Hybrids. The original members of this group were Siphoners who didn’t have the ability to use their own magic, but they can siphon magic from other sources. Because of this, they were considered as abominations and were banished from the Gemini Coven. Lily Salvatore turned them into vampires and mentored them.
In the end, the only group that was left standing was the Mystic Falls Gang. With Matt hinting to run for the sheriff, Caroline and Alaric starting up a new school for the supernatural children, Bonnie setting off to travel the world, Damon and Elena getting the happy ending as normal humans.
