The reason the Vampires need blood more than anything to survive is because it was an ingredient used by Esther in her immortality spell to create the Originals. If vampires don’t feed or animal or human blood, they would become extremely weak and started desiccating.
Despite being all mighty and powerful, they have several weaknesses. Such as if a vampire is stabbed with a wooden object through their heart, they start desiccating. Even though they can survive on animal blood, but it makes them weaker compared to the human blood consuming vampires. They will also heal slowly, their compulsion also becomes weaker. If a vampire’s neck is snapped broken, then they would be rendered unconscious for a while. However, decapitation can result in an instant death. Heart extraction will result in a permanent death. And if a vampire takes the cure, they would become a human again.
