4. TRUE LOVE
While in the show, Elena starts with Damon, but after becoming a vampire she chooses Damon because of him accepting her unconditionally and not trying to change her. Even after she becomes human, she chooses Damon which proves their love was not due to the sirebond. In the end, both Damon and Elena live a long life and have kids whereas Stefan married Caroline, but sacrificed himself within a day of their marriage. If you talk about the books, Elena does share a strong and passionate relationship with Damon Salvatore. But her true love will always be Stefan because he is her soulmate. In the last novel of the Hunters trilogy, The Hunters; Destiny Rising, Elena ultimately chooses Stefan over Damon Salvatore as her true love. After LJ Smith was fired (for undisclosed reasons), Aubrey Clark took over the books in which Elena gravitates towards Damon. But throughout the LJ Smith books, it’s clear that Elena is in love with Stefan much more than with Damon. According to a report, it is believed that LJ Smith wanted to explore more of Damon/Elena relationship, but the company wanted her to stay focused on Stelena.

3. SIMILARITIES
All the three characters share numerous interesting similarities:
- All three characters have died at some point and have been resurrected.
- Stefan, Damon, and Elena, all three characters have been to the Other Side and returned.
- All the three characters have found peace and reunited with their loved ones.
- All of them have been turned into a vampire, ghost, and reverted back to human in the end by taking the cure.
- Damon, Elena, and Stefan, have served as the antagonist of the series at some point.
2. STELENA VS DELENA
The debate and the ship war between Delena and Stelena is never ending. There are many supporters of these ships, there are many actors, celebrities, crew members who are fan of the ships. Take a look at the supporters:
Delena is supported by Daniel Gillies (Elijah), Paul Wesley (Stefan), Chris Wood (Kai), Matt Davis (Alaric), Kayla Ewell (Vicki), Candice King (Caroline).

It’s interesting how the show creator Julie Plec chose Stelena. Even the actors Ian Somerhalder & Nina Dobrev picked Stelena whereas Paul Wesley chose Delena.
1. ALTERNATE ENDING
While the Vampire Diaries ended with Elena and Damon walking into the sunset, reuniting with their loved ones. Stefan and Damon share a warm hug in the closing moments of the show. But it was Damon who got the girl! Interestingly, there was a pitch that Elena would end up with someone else other than the Salvatores and both the brothers would watch her from the Other Side. Even the actors Paul and Ian expressed liking for this idea.
