There was a backdoor pilot to this spin-off in the fourth season of the Vampire Diaries which followed Klaus and Elijah traveling to New Orleans where they come across a life-changing revelation. The Originals is the tale of the Mikaelsons, it recalls the events that happened before the TVD and gives the viewers a deep exploration of the individual lives of the Mikaelson siblings. While there is no end to the comparisons between the two shows, some feel TVD is superior while some disagree with this view. It all comes down to how you see it. 5. THE ORIGINALS DID NOT OVERUSE CERTAIN ELEMENTS
While the Originals is set in the same TVD universe, but it featured several new characters, spells, and magical elements that we were not aware of in the Vampire Diaries. One of the major problems with Vampire Diaries is that some of its biggest strengths became its biggest weaknesses. The love triangle and the doppelgangers are the highlights of TVD. But the same things became its limitation due to its excessive use. The love triangle overshadowed other TVD storylines, but the viewers lost their interest after a while. Similarly, the concept of doppelgangers was refreshing, but it got stale after a while. Originals avoided these problems by not indulging much in the love triangles even though they had all the options (Elijah/Jackson/Hayley, Klaus/Aurora/Lucien, Klaus/Aurora/Cami). This doesn’t mean Originals do not have romance, but its storylines only contained a healthy amount of romance, but more focus was on its central plot. It could have also played with the concept of the doppelgangers (Tatia), but it focused more on refreshing storylines.
4. THE ANTIHEROES
Let’s be honest, probably the main reason why people fell in love with the Originals is due to the Mikaelsons. Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah, and Kol first made their appearances in the earlier seasons of TVD. The viewers instantly fell in love with these characters. They actually became more popular than TVD protagonists such as Damon, Stefan, and Elena. But here’s the catch, while characters such as Damon, Stefan, and Elena have darkness inside them, but they are the heroes who try to do the right thing for the most part. But the main protagonists of Originals aren’t really heroes, one could even argue that they are villains. We see the story from their perspective so we sympathize with them, we downplay their evil acts, and all their sins are forgiven. These characters aren’t your typical good and bad characters, but they comprise several layers of grey. Their motivations, their desires, and their needs are pretty complex and one cannot oversimplify their character and define them based on one scene or episode. You have to really explore their story in depth to get a better understanding of every character. Also, the fact these so-called ‘heroes’ are capable of acts that even you cannot even imagine a villain committing.
