It would not be exaggerating to say that Klaus in the books is thousand times sinister than his TV counterpart. Julie Plec and the team transformed Klaus Mikaelson from a villain to an antihero, and then finally into a protagonist. Whereas his book version is a pure antagonist who cares about no one. He has done purely evil deeds.

In the novels, Klaus cared about nobody apart from himself. He didn’t mind who got in his way. He was extremely ruthless and there’s no limit that he wouldn’t cross. Whereas Klaus in the series cared about his family, he even tried avenging the death of Kol. After the birth of Hope, he changed drastically, he became more empathetic. Klaus had romantic relationships with Caroline and Cami. He made sacrifices for his family, even gave up his own life for his daughter Hope.

If you read the books then you will see vampirism as some sort of terrible disease and Klaus would appear as the master devil. Surely Klaus was evil and ruthless in the beginning, but slowly his character began evolving. He became redeemed by the final season of the Originals. Even though he was still feared among the Supernatural community, but there were bigger threats than him such as Marcel (Upgraded Original), Hollow (Witch) who stood against him and easily overpowered him. Whereas when it comes to the books, he is the strongest character ever and is greatly feared. Klaus from the books is pure evil and full of cruelty, he is the living embodiment of the evil. There is no redemption of any sort for this old one in the books

Klaus in the TV series is close to 1000+ years old whereas the one from the books has an age between 4700-6500 years. Nikklaus Mikaelson in the series is much younger than his counterpart. Klaus in the books existed long before the pyramids were built. The one in the books wears an old dusty raincoat. His hair is blond, almost white. Also, he has a Nordic appearance. There’s also a difference in the personality of the Klaus. Both the Klaus are crazy, psychotic, and killing hungry. But the one in the books is more cunning, manipulative, and persuasive. Whereas the one in the TV series is more emotional and significantly hot headed. The character of Klaus in the novels has strong similarities to LJ Smith’s character Julian from the Forbidden Game. It is also inspired from the character of John Ryder from the movie ‘The Hitcher’.
