Both pairs have crossed paths on numerous occasions and it resulted in amazing storylines. While their first interaction happened in Season 2 when the Salvatores come across Elijah and learned from him about Klaus and his plans. Klaus would arrive and cause chaos in the Mystic Falls. In the beginning, Klaus Mikaelson and the Salvatores were on the antagonistic terms as Klaus wanted to sacrifice Elena for his ritual and the brothers did all they could to safeguard her. Elijah would assist the Salvatores on numerous occasions. He made a deal with the Damon to get back at Klaus and to reunite his family who has been daggered for years.

But later on we learn that Klaus and Stefan Salvatore had crossed paths in the past, in the year 1922, they first met each other. This was the time when Stefan had turned off his humanity was on a Ripper rampage. He came across Rebekah Mikaelson and they became entangled. When Klaus learned about him, he was impressed by the brutality of Stefan as Klaus himself had been a victim of abuse which caused him to become inhumane. They soon became great friends and would referred each other at brothers. But when Rebekah and Marcel called Mikael on Klaus in New Orleans. The Mikaelson siblings had no other choice, but to leave their beloved city. Klaus compelled Stefan to forget about their time together. They would later reunited 90 years later in Mystic Falls.
In Season 2 finale, Stefan would strike a deal with Klaus to save his brother Damon’s life. The deal involved Stefan shutting down his humanity and leaving Mystic Falls with Klaus. In exchange, Klaus would provide a vial of his hybrid blood to Stefan which could cure the werewolf bite of Damon.
In Season 3, Klaus would tell Stefan about their previous encounter. He would make Stefan remember the memories of him and Rebekah from the 1920s. When Stefan betrayed Klaus, he compelled Klaus to switch off his humanity and do his bidding. However, the resurrected Mikael would help Stefan in gaining back his freedom by removing his compulsion.
