Welcome back to Humor Nation. The concept of doppelgangers was introduced pretty early in the Vampire Diaries. In Season 1, through flashbacks we learned about Katherine, the Petrova Doppelganger, the exact lookalike of Elena Gilbert who captivated the interest of the Salvatore brothers. As the show progresses, we learn about the doppelganger saga. It wasn’t until Season 2 that Katherine’s backstory becomes clear. Katherine Pierce made her debut in the episode ‘Return’ and played a supporting antagonist for Season 2. We learn that she has been on a run from the Mikaelson Family. The true nature of the doppelgangers is explored in Season 5 where we learn how the Salvatore and the Petrova Doppelganger bloodline came into the existence.

TVD Afterlife Quiz: Where Would You Belong – Hell, Other Side, or Ancestral Plane?
The Doppelgangers have been a significant part of every major storyline. Throughout the show, we have been introduced to several doppelgangers. The entire doppelganger fiasco started with Amara and Silas who became immortal. Now nature had to maintain the balance as every living being should meet its end. Therefore, nature created the shadow selves of these immortal beings who would die in place of the immortal beings. Therefore the very purpose of doppelgangers is to die in place of Silas and Amara. While Amara took birth in 1st century, her doppelgangers are born with an interval of every 500 years. Thus Tatia took birth in 10th century, Katherine was born in 15the century, and Elena took birth in 20th century. Elena Gilbert is the last known doppelganger.

Similarly, in place of Silas, his doppelgangers who were born are Stefan and Tom Avery. Stefan is the narrator of the vampire diaries. A strongly moral character who always tries doing the right thing, but his ripper side has often taken him to the dark side. In Season 5, we were introduced to the human doppelganger of Silas, a paramedic named Tom Avery. If Katherine had not turned Stefan into a vampire then Stefan would have never met Elena and they wouldn’t have fallen in love. Tom was the one who was supposed to fall in love with Elena, but fate had entirely different plans.

It is said that the doppelgangers are destined to find each other and fall in love, and eventually end up together. But Elena defied her fate when she chose Damon. Qetsiyah once pointed out how she has witnessed the births of numerous doppelgangers, repeating the same tragic story over and over.
