5. THE ORIGINALS
We have seen numerous villains on TVD in its long run. Villains of all sorts, ranging from vampires, witches to sirens, psychics. But none was so compelling and intimidating as the Original Vampire Klaus Mikaelson. In Season 2, the Mikaelson family was introduced to the viewers of the TVD and the rest is history. We learn about the legend of the ruthless Klaus Mikaelson who desires absolute power. He is the reason why even the dangerous Katherine Pierce went in a hiding. Soon, we are introduced to the entire Mikaelson family, comprising of Elijah, Klaus, Rebekah, Kol, Finn, Esther, and Mikael. The Originals arc is perhaps the best storyline in all seasons. Whether it’s Klaus trying to break the curse or Esther creating another Original to hunt down her children, or Rebekah becoming a high-schooler.
The Mikaelson family made TVD more fun, there popularity surpassed the main cast of TVD at one point. This is the reason why the creators decided to launch a spin-off focusing on the Mikaelson family. It’s no surprise that Vampire Diaries suffered after the departure of the Originals. Many believe Season 2-4 was the peak period of the Vampire Diaries.
4. DEPARTURE OF NINA DOBREV
Whether you are a fan of Elena Gilbert or not, you cannot deny she has been a major part of the Vampire Diaries. One of the central characters on the show and it was her love triangle with the Salvatores who try their best to protect her was the major theme which pushed the plot for most time. Even though we were introduced to the Originals, Immortals, Doppelgangers, Werewolves, the show expanded beyond the three main characters. But the departure of Nina Dobrev led to a huge shake-up, the storylines were changed, the show went in a totally different direction following the actress’ decision to leave the show.
While the creators were smart enough to write-off Elena’s character by placing her in a magical coma which would allow her character to return if the opportunity ever arises. She would eventually return in the finale episode when Bonnie breaks the curse and she is reunited with Damon, two of them living a long happy life together. However, if the actress had not left the show, the series could have an entirely different ending. The love triangle could have become relevant again, but Nina’s absence forced the creators to change the plans.
