They were on a run for centuries because they were tasked with holding Katherine Pierce who would be used in a hybrid ritual sacrifice by Klaus, but she escaped. They sought freedom by offering another Petrova Doppelganger Elena to Elijah and asked for his forgiveness. This was supposed to a peace offering by handing Elena to Elijah from Trevor and Rose. Elijah says that he forgave Rose because she helped Trevor out of loyalty which he could respect, but then proceeds to decapitate Trevor in front of his love interest Rose which broke her.

Klaus has daggered his siblings numerous times out of his fear and paranoia. But Elijah is supposed to be better than him. In Season 2 of the Originals, the arrival of Dahlia poses a grave threat to Hope and her loved ones. Everyone has their strategy as how to keep Hope safe. Hayley decides that the best option to keep Hope safe would be to go to Bayou. Klaus disagrees and orders them to stay at the infirmary. Elijah allows Hayley and Jackson to leave with Hope, Klaus gets furious and starts fighting him. Elijah would then dagger his brother with the Gold Dagger and neutralized him. There could have been better ways to handle the situation, but stopping a father from keeping his daughter safe by daggering isn’t noble at all.
