SIMILARITIES

  • Stefan remains the lead protagonist of the show just like the books. His personality is also pretty similar as he is moral and compassionate vampire.
  • Just like the books, he falls in love with a girl named Katherine who turns out to be a vampire and is turned into a vampire by Katherine.
  • Similar to the books, he arrives in Mystic Falls (Fells Church) to start a new life and to blend among the humans. He enrolls at the Mystic Falls School (Robert E Lee High School) where he comes across Elena and becomes fascinated by her due to her exact similar appearance to Katherine.

DIFFERENCES

  • Stefan was born in 1490 and is 500+ years old in the books whereas he was born in 1846 which makes him 170+ years old in the show. The name of his parents in the books are Giuseppe and Contessa Di Salvatore, but in the show the names are Giuseppe and Lilian (Lily) Salvatore.
  • In the books, Stefan was devastated after learning about the demise of Katherine, but in the show he loved him until he didn’t know that she was a vampire. Their relationship began antagonistic after he discovered about her betrayal.
  • He fell in love with Caroline and the two got married in the show whereas in the books, Caroline teamed up with Tyler to get revenge against Stelena.

DAMON SALVATORE

  • Both Stefan and Damon competed for the love and affection for Katherine which resulted in them developing an antagonistic rivalry. Damon arrives in Mystic Falls (Fells Church) and causes immense chaos.
  • Damon makes advances towards Elena from time to time, eventually she starts reciprocating and the two get into a romantic relationship.

DIFFERENCES

  • Damon was born in Florence in the year 1487 which makes him 500+ years old whereas in the books he is 170+ years old as he was born in 1839 in Mystic Falls.
  • In the books, he is the love interest of Bonnie McCullough whereas in the show, Bonnie and Damon are friends.
  • Damon is much more powerful, sinister, and ruthless in the books than his show counterpart.

KATHERINE

  • She falls in the love with the Salvatores and eventually turns them both into the vampires.
  • Both in the books and the show, Katherine has a strong liking and preference for Stefan out of both Salvatore brothers.
  • Both in the books and show, Katherine has a compassionate and caring personality at first, but she becomes cruel and deceiving after transforming into a vampire.

DIFFERENCES

  • She has German roots in the books whereas it is changed to Bulgarian setting in the Vampire Diaries show because of Nina Dobrev having Bulgarian heritage.
  • In the Vampire Diaries books, the name of Katherine is changed to Katherine Pierce/Petrova from Katherine Von Schwartzschild.
  • Klaus turns her into a vampire whereas it’s the blood of Rose responsible for turning her into a vampire in the books.
  • In the novels, Katherine in the half-sister of Elena whereas Elena is a descendant of Katherine in the TV show.
  • After being revived, Katherine has a new found perspective, she treats the Salvatores well whereas in the show, she never changes even after becoming human.
