Season 2 explores Sam’s backstory and abilities that he acquired after drinking the blood of Azazel as an infant. Later, many other psychic children similar to Sam are introduced. They all are placed in an abandoned town by Azazel who tells them that only one of them will make it out alive. A Psychic guy named Jake stabs Sam that kills him. Dean cannot bear the loss and summons the crossroad demon, makes a deal to bring his brother Sam back in exchange for his soul, the demon gives him only a year.
Season 3 is the shortest of all the seasons and it introduces a hunter named Bela who outsmarts the Winchesters. In the finale of Season 2, the gates of hell were opened which resulted in numerous demons escaping. Now it’s up to the Winchesters to save them. Bela also made a deal with a demon, her contract is held by a demon named Lilith who also holds the contract of Dean. The final episode features Dean being mauled by the hellhounds and is trapped in hell.
In the premiere episode of Season 4, Dean is raised from Hell with the help of Castiel who tells him that he is tasked with playing an important role in the upcoming apocalypse. The angels are trying to prevent the apocalypse from happening by stopping Lilith from breaking the seals that would free Lucifer. The finale episode of this season sees the Winchesters killing Lilith which breaks the final season and it frees Lucifer.
