Supernatural Season 5 dives deep into the ultimate event of the apocalypse in the Supernatural world as both the Winchesters square off against the most lethal enemy yet, the archangel Lucifer who has escaped from the captivity of hell and vows to conquer everything by starting a war. Both Dean and Lucifer were transported to a safe location where the angel Zachariah informs them about the impending doom as Lucifer has emerged and is seeking a vessel. The brothers quickly find themselves with odds against powerful beings such as angels, demons, and the Four Horsemen, with chaos and destruction at every step.
While the central focus of Season 5 is the apocalypse storyline, but this season also emphasizes the complex and strained relationship between the boys. Season 4 saw Sam Winchester being manipulated by Ruby which caused a rift between Sam and Dean. By the time, Sam realized the trickery of Ruby, it was too late. Lucifer managed to get a temporary vessel in the form of Nick, but nothing would stop him from possessing Sam. This results in Sam drifting to the dark side with the sole purpose of stopping Lucifer using his special powers, Dean fears that he would lose his brother in the fight with Lucifer. All this brought an intense and dynamic emotional layer to the series which showcased the unbreakable bond between the boys.
The season concludes with the episode titled ‘Swan Swong’ which serves as the finale envisioned by Eric Kripke for the Supernatural. This episode serves as culmination of the epic journey of the Winchesters and it is filled with mythology, action, drama, and suspense. The boys take a final stand stand against the archangel Lucifer, to stop the apocalypse. Lucifer has taken the possession of Sam and he is ready to fight against his brother Michael who houses inside the vessel of Adam Milligan. The climax of the Swan Song highlights the great sacrifice of Sam Winchester, the love of the family between the boys, and the feeling of selflessness for the greater good. Many consider ‘Swan Song’ to be among the best episodes of the show and feel that it should have been the ‘true conclusion’ of the show.
Season 5 comprises of numerous great moments and episodes. The episode titled ‘The End’ sees a post-apocalyptic world where Dean experiences a future where Lucifer managed to emerge victorious. This season also offered great character developments, Castiel especially had undergone tremendous character development as he rebelled against the orders of heaven and stood by the Winchesters’ side.
