The show dives deep into themes such as family love, loyalty, politics, and due to its darkish atmospheric setting, complicated characters who aren’t your typical good and bad, but rather morally ambiguous ones.

5. A SHARED UNIVERSE
Both the The Vampire Diaries and The Originals are set in the same universe. They take place in the fictional universe called TVD Universe that has been created by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec. Did you know that the pilot episode of the Originals aired as a backdoor pilot in the Vampire Diaries Season 4. While TVD takes place in Mystic Falls, it is the birthplace of the Originals and the town has been referenced several times. There have been several characters who have transitioned from one show to the other show. Characters such as Caroline, Klaus, Elijah, Alaric, have made appearances across both the shows. The crossover episodes resulted in an effective storytelling that further enhanced the connection between both the shows. Whereas Originals central focus is the Mikaelson Family and it centers around the Originals such as Rebekah, Klaus, Elijah as they navigate through the complex politics of New Orleans while trying to repair their strained relationships. Vampire Diaries carries a teenage show feel with elements of high school romance and supernatural themes. It has a good balance of hilarious comical and serious dramatic moments whereas Originals has a darker and mature feel to it.
