Welcome back to Humor Nation. The tale of “The Vampire Diaries” started with the Salvatore brothers, and it ended with them. We first see Stefan Salvatore in the pilot episode as the new student at Mystic Falls High School, where he runs into Elena Gilbert. Elena also finds herself drawn to this mysterious new student. It seemed like they share some eternal connection. We learn that Elena carries a bizarre resemblance to Katherine Pierce, an old lover of Stefan’s. Stefan and Elena give in to their feelings and start a romantic relationship. Despite knowing that Stefan is a vampire, Elena chooses to stay by Stefan’s side.
The majority of the plot in the earlier seasons is driven by the romantic relationship between Stefan and Elena, and the supernatural threats that follow them. His older brother Damon Salvatore also enters the scene, with a promise to make his brother suffer as a punishment for turning him into a vampire. While Damon is brash, impulsive, and unpredictable, Stefan Salvatore is a vampire who can keep his impulses in check. He is a compassionate person because of which he experiences great guilt when his dark instincts take over him.
In the flashbacks, we learn that both Stefan and Damon fell in love with a beautiful woman named Katherine Pierce. To be with Katherine forever, Stefan embraced being a vampire, whereas Damon didn’t want to be one, but Stefan influenced him to go through the transition. Since then, Damon has tried numerous times to make Stefan pay by appealing to his darker instincts. Damon Salvatore has never gotten over Katherine Pierce, and she wanted to free herself from captivity in the tomb. But he is surprised to learn that Katherine has never been in the tomb, and she admits to never loving Damon, but it was always Stefan. He is heartbroken, but Elena’s kindness and attention make Damon fall in love with her.

Soon, Damon transforms into an anti-hero who, along with Stefan, has vowed to protect Elena. Elena is reluctant at first to give in to her love for Damon, who is also her sire. We are puzzled whether Elena’s love is genuine or is it because of the sire bond. But even after the sire bond was broken, her love was intact.
