It was Esther who created the Originals, from which the race of vampires started. It was Katherine Pierce who turned the Salvatores into vampires and made them crazy in love with her. And It was Elena Gilbert, a girl who transformed the Salvatores and served as the main protagonist of the story.

Elena Gilbert is well known for her compassion, she cares deeply for her loved ones. She started as a teenager who lost her parents in a tragic accident and tried coping up with the loss while taking care of her brother. But she meets the mysterious handsome Stefan Salvatore and falls in love with her. Later, she finds out that he is a vampire. In the season 3 finale, Elena is transformed into a vampire and her vampiric side is ruthless. Luckily, she is reverted back into human again.
Another powerful and independent female character in TVD is Caroline. Originally, she wasn’t a fan favorite, she was more like an annoying girl who was extremely concerned with how others view her. But once she is turned into vampire, she develops self-confidence in herself and stops caring about what others think. Caroline became more humane with her new vampire abilities. She values her loved ones and did all in her power for the greater good.
